Suspension Springs
The benefits of high-speed stress relief are most relevant in the suspension-spring industry. This is one of the many applications where Pyromaitre has enjoyed its greatest success. One customer was stress relieving suspension springs with a 16 mm (0.629”) wire diameter in 96 minutes. Pyro’s high-precision heat-transfer oven was able to reduce cycle time to 6 minutes. The customer enjoyed massive energy savings of 25% per part produced and a 50% economy of floor space. This lead to many new systems being sold rapidly. This application also lends itself to manufacturing any valves and suspension springs for cars, trucks, buses and trains. This application is also ideal for producing household, heavy-duty and even military components.
Torsion Springs
High-speed stress relieving started with torsion springs in the 1990s. The first ovens yielded 30% rejected parts. After series of time and temperature tests, the processing temperature was increased by 100°C, far above the temperatures then recommended. Cycle time was thus reduced from 60 minutes to just 3 minutes for a CrSi 6mm wire. Best of all, this new in-line process yielded no rejects. This process efficiency was consistently proven and reproduced on many other types of springs since then.
Wire Forms
Wire form products have a very wide variety of forms and applications. Uniform structure is a critical feature in every part of the product. In high-volume production, long heat-treatment time often causes bottlenecks in the production process. Reducing the time required for stress relief can make a huge difference. Pyro ovens provide the solution.
Valve Springs
Pyro’s reputation for valve spring expertise started with General Motors in 1997. GM purchased a Pyro electric oven, which allowed them to reduce cycle time from 35 to 9 minutes, from coiler to the end of conveyor. Moreover, with a much shorter preheat time of 10 minutes compared to the 45 minutes for a conventional oven, GM increased available production time by almost 4 weeks per year, and achieved considerable energy savings.
